Creating a Podcast

The great thing about podcasting is that it gives a medium to anyone who wants to broadcast their imagination and thoughts to the world.  Below is a tutorial on how to create your very own podcast.  With something to say, the help of a few devices, and in short number of steps, you'll be broadcasting to the whole world!

1.  The first step to creating a podcast is having something you want people to hear and/or see.  A podcast can be about virtually anything.  Here is a short list of ideas
  •  Read your short stories or poems
  • Interview people in your town about current news
  • Review newly release music, movies, or books
  • Give audio tours of local museums
  • Comment on current sporting news
  • Broadcast your orginal songs

2.  Once you know what you want your podcast to be about, you have to decide how you want to say it.  Will you have a script or will you be improvising?  Will you be by yourself or will you be interacting with another person?  Will it be an audio or video podcast?

  • Listen and watch other podcasts to learn about the craft.  Pay attention to techniques they use.  Take note of what works well and what does not.
  • Your broadcast will be easier to listen to or watch if it is planned out.  Even if you are not following a script, it is wise to have an outline of what you want to be heard or seen.  Decide about how long your podcast will be and how often you will create new episodes (daily, weekly, monthly).

3.  Once you have planned your podcast, you need the instruments to create it.

  • You need a computer with Internet access.  Also, you need audio editing software if you are doing an audio podcast, or video editing software if you are doing a video podcast.
          • If you do not have audio recording/editing software installed on your computer, Audacity is a great, free software you can download off of the Internet.
          • Although many computers have an internal microphone, it is best to use external microphone for it will lessen background noise and other interference.
          • You will also need MP3 encoding software to convert your recordings to the preferred format.  iTunes contains the ability to convert files to MP3 or you can use LAME MP3 encoder

4.   Record and edit your broadcast.

  • Find a quiet place that will not be disturbed, start your software, and begin recording.  If you make mistakes, you can choose to keep going and edit them out later or start over.
  • If you want to add more flare to your podcast, add in some background music or special effects.   Here are some links to help you with your editing.
  1. Editing in Audacity
  2.  Editing in Garageband
  3. Editing with iMovie

5.  Save your podcast as a MP3 file.

  • You can export your recording as an MP3 file easily in Audacity, Garageband, or convert it in iTunes.
  • To lower the file size of your recording, you can to the preferences menu in the program and lower the bit rate size.

6.  Publish your podcast.

There are a few different ways you can publish your podcasts and make them subscribable.  The first is to use a podcasting hosting web site.  GCast and Switchpod.com are two examples.

  • GCast is a free podcast hosting web site.  It allows users to upload .mp3's (or use your phone to call and make an .mp3!).  The site also gives you HTML so you can paste a mp3 player in your web site and creates the RSS feed so visitors can subscribe to your podcast!!

Watch this video on using Gcast to host your podcasts!

      • Another easy way to publish your podcasts is by creating a blog on a blog service that allows MP3's.  Many blogs have plugins available that make the RSS feed, so you do not have to worry about creating it yourself.  Odeo Blog and Word Press are two free blogging services that allow audio uploading.
